Looking for an impressionistic spontaneity in your work? Do you want to apply your paint in a more gestural, painterly manner? Want to stop overworking details? Students will learn tips on how to communicate visually with suggestions rather than trying to describe everything in precise detail. Students will loosen up by using bigger brushes, more paint, working faster, and placing marks & gestures with purpose and intention.
The more you simplify what you do, the more it frees your mind to concentrate on staying loose.
Bring reference photos and a selection of canvases!

This class will deal with painting as a means of expression. We will select various artists from 19th and 20th centuries. We will use these artists as reference- experiencing what they experienced, gaining knowledge along the way. You will be guided to find your own voice while learning how to technically achieve the results you want. There are no rules but lots of principles.

ADULTS/14+
Explore the art of mosaics in this engaging mosaic class. For the first three weeks, students will create a small 3×3 tile focusing on creating various ways to create skies, water and flowers using a variety of materials. Weeks 4-7 you will create a larger project of your own design using the skills of the previous three weeks. Using ceramic, stone, glass, natural and found objects, students will design mosaics with a variety of materials provided. Through demonstrations and one-on-one instruction, you’ll learn the mortar method — no messy grout required! This class offers a fun, supportive environment to spark your creativity.
Course materials/fee:
- A materials fee of $35 will include a base for each of the four projects, mortar, and a set amount of material for this project.
- All tools will be provided.
- Each student is welcome to bring one or two memento objects or relics if they wish to use them in their mosaic, along with their curiosity.

Location: Washington Art Association’s General Studio
This class embraces the immediacy and portability of watercolor to explore seeing, interpreting, and responding to the world around us. Students will create small works based on everyday objects and observations, with an emphasis on process over perfection. Close looking at both our own work and the work of artists from art history will play a central role in shaping each week’s projects. We’ll explore a range of watercolor techniques while learning to embrace the element of chance, imperfection, and the evolving nature of a painting.
MEGAN MARDEN is a painter based in Connecticut. She received her BA and MFA in Painting from Western Connecticut State University and continued her studies in painting and drawing at the New York Studio School. Her work has been supported by grants and awards from the State of Connecticut Office of the Arts and Western Connecticut State University. In 2019, she was a Four Pillars Artist-in-Residence at the Mount Gretna School of Art. Megan exhibits her work at the Oxbow Gallery in East Hampton, Massachusetts, and her paintings have been included in recent group exhibitions at the Joyce Goldstein Gallery, the University of Connecticut, the Bowery Gallery, and The Painting Center.

Hand building (pinch, coil, slabs) and decoration techniques will be taught through demonstrations and critiques. The focus will be on having fun while experimenting and learning a variety of techniques.
Each student is taught individually at their own experience level. Create your own ideas for projects and personal goals.
Tuition includes 1 bag of clay.
The firing fee is an additional 6 cents per cubic inch.

Students will learn to see relationships of shape and value, judge proportions, develop compositional sensitivity and build skills that can be used to express personal artistic vision. Scott takes a hands-on approach with demonstrations and continual class-wide and individual instruction. Whether beginner or intermediate, be prepared to learn, explore materials, create and have fun!
