Location: Washington Art Association General Studio
Whether you are just beginning or ready to find your voice, these classes will quickly advance you towards your personal goals. Mr. DeVoe guides you individually with lectures and demonstrations. Students work in their preferred media, oil, acrylic, watercolor or pastel. Beginners learn quickly how to build a painting with light, atmosphere and form. Learning to draw with the brush is emphasized as is the mixing of color. Composition and design are always analyzed to build solid exciting subjects.
The morning class has subjects set up to work from (students can choose to bring subjects of their own), while the afternoon classes are dedicated to subjects students are building on their own.
Cancellation Policy
Participants who withdraw from a class must request a refund or credit more than 14 days prior to the start of the class in order to receive a full refund or credit (minus a $20 cancellation fee or 10% for one-day workshops). Participants who cancel a registration between 8 and 14 days prior to the start of the class may receive a 50% refund or credit. Participants who cancel a registration less than 7 days prior to the start of the class will not receive a refund or credit.
Washington Art Association does not offer prorating for classes, and there are no make-ups, credits or refunds if a student misses a class. Membership fees are non-refundable.

For students who work in oils: (This list duplicates as best we can the colors on Rembrandt’s and Velazquez’s palettes.) These colors are recommended for students who prefer acrylic or watercolor as their media of choice. canvas or panels of different sizes.

- Paper towels
- Good quality bristle brushes (I use Robert Simmons Signet). You don’t need anything smaller than a #6 and should have one at least as large as 12.
- A 2 or 3 inch house brush is very useful. I also buy sets of softer brushes these days.
- Palette knives are needed
- I use cold pressed linseed oil for a medium (Flax Oil from the health food store) and I use walnut oil
- A pastel set is useful for sketching and drawing
- Sketchbook and drawing materials are useful (pencil, charcoal, and ink)
- I use Canola oil for cleaning brushes during painting; they clean out at home easily with dish soap. I use an old tooth brush to push the paint out stroking from the ferrel towards the tip.
