About Sketching, text by Alexander Purves

Drawing helps me to see. It forces me to look hard. It requires effort, but it also gives great pleasure, and looking back at these travel sketches brings memories to life. Some drawings are careful records, others are rapid gestures. I draw whatever catches my eye and triggers my curiosity. It could be a shape, a beam of light, a person. I typically use a ball point pen when I travel. It’s convenient, doesn’t smudge, and it responds to pressure. But I also recognize that my fascination with line was cultivated during a Yale undergraduate freehand drawing course taught by Josef Albers, who only allowed us to use the point of the pencil.

Sketchbooks are visual journals. They are private and are not intended for public viewing, however others have encouraged me to show them, as they illustrate the ways I see.

Take Great Photos with your Smartphone Workshop (for both iPhones and Androids) with Peter Glass (Sunday, May 17 | 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM)

Sunday, May 17 | 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM

Location: Washington Art Association General Studio

*Minimum number of students needed to hold workshop: 9
Maximum number of students: 15

*Sign up before May 3 to secure your spot and make the workshop happen!

The quality of smartphone cameras is improving rapidly. In many situations, they work quite well as stand-ins for 35mm cameras. Therefore, dragging around a heavy camera, hoping not to miss that great picture opportunity, is no longer necessary. A good quality smartphone camera may work almost as well.

This class is for those interested in producing high-quality images with their smartphone cameras. That means learning and understanding the camera controls, as well as when and how to use them. Doing so will put the photographer in better control of their camera. And that will mean significantly improved photographs.

Please note: This class will not cover the taking of selfies.

Everything necessary for taking great smartphone pictures will be addressed, including:

  • Learning how to use the camera controls on your specific smartphone
  • Basic photographic theory
  • Discussing and, if desired, installing other smartphone camera apps
  • Suggestions for hand-holding your camera
  • Specific steps to follow when taking a picture
  • Useful accessories for your smartphone camera
  • And, how to compose your photographs to produce truly wonderful results

A very complete handout will be distributed on arrival. It contains lots of information and will greatly simplify the process of understanding what’s being taught in class. You’ll also find it quite useful for review after you get home.

Don’t forget to bring your fully charged smartphone, the smartphone’s charger, and any accessories you have.

The carving will be done with an old ball point pen or dull pencil. The prints will be white line, full color, and mimic reduction plate linoleum prints. The inks are water based so clean up is easy. You’ll experiment with background colors and an array of object colors. You can even roll Ombres of mixed colors. You will need a contour line drawing on a 9 x12 or 8 ½ x 11 paper to begin. All subject matters are possible. Landscapes, seascapes, still life, flowers, animals, even bugs if you like.

Intro to Basket Weaving Workshop with Virginia Zimmermann (Tuesday, May 12 | 1:00 PM – 5:00 PM)

Tuesday, May 12 | 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM

Location: *Washington Art Association General Studio

*Depending on student interest and the weather, this workshop can be conducted outdoors in the back patio of WAA

Basket making is as old as humanity. It is an essential craft and art form. People need a means to store and carry things – baskets were created out of this necessity. Every culture, weaves their own twist into the baskets they make. An integral part of the basket making process, is to pass on the knowledge and joy of the craft.

In this workshop you will learn to make a small reed woven basket from beginning (bottom) to rim (border). The techniques can be used to weave future baskets out of all kinds of materials. You can use just about anything to make a basket. You can use store bought reeds or materials gathered from nature. You can also make your own cordage
from plants in the garden. Be careful not to gather poison ivy!

Baskets can be woven anywhere you are comfortable using wet material. The reeds will need to be soaked for about 20 minutes to become flexible. They will require you to periodically dip them back in the water or spray them. If they dry out, they will become brittle once again. We will work at tables in the General Studio or outside on the back patio if the weather is warm.

No prerequisites.

Instructor Material fee of $10 (payable at the Workshop)
