*Class will be moved inside to the General Studio or to the Norman Sunshine Center (11 Green Hill Road, Washington, CT) during inclement weather. Changes to class location will be made the day prior, and students will be notified by email and/or phone.

Led by sculptor Justin Perlman.

This class is for anyone interested in the ancient and wonderful art of stone carving. Students will be introduced to this medium’s tools and techniques through discussion, demonstration, and guided instruction on their own moderate piece of soft stone, which may be purchased separately as a materials fee. Registered students will receive further information from Justin about the materials fee closer to the start date.

Instruction will center around three dimensional carving skills, and the process of bringing a sculpture to life in a small piece of easily carved soft alabaster.

This class if for all levels, more advanced students may bring their own work if they choose. They will learn the use of traditional hand chisels as well as small power tools. They will also learn about contemporary methods of cutting and polishing stone.

It is recommended that participants wear/bring:

  • boots
  • leather garden or work gloves
  • M95 dust mask for the fine stone dust

Bio:

Justin Perlman is a sculptor and fine artist living in Bethlehem, CT.  The pursuit of various artistic processes has taken Justin on diverse roads as exemplified in his work, which exists in private and public collections around the globe. From studies in anthropology at Hampshire College he journeyed to focus on sculpture at the Art Students League of NY. From there he moved to Pietrasanta, Italy so that he may work with master sculptors and artisans of marble carving. Seeking deeper knowledge in sculptural processes, Justin returned to the USA as an apprentice and master chaser at a bronze foundry where he trained in all facets of fine art bronze casting. In 2004, Justin moved to Connecticut where he continues to create works of art for exhibition, as well as private and public commissions.  Justin is teaching sculpture, metal work, and bronze casting at the Silvermine Art Center in New Canaan, CT. He is also the co artistic director of Sova Dance and Puppet Theater, and President of the New England Sculptors Association

Cancellation Policy

Participants who withdraw from a class must request a refund or credit more than 14 days prior to the start of the class in order to receive a full refund or credit (minus a $20 cancellation fee or 10% for one-day workshops). Participants who cancel a registration between 8 and 14 days prior to the start of the class may receive a 50% refund or credit. Participants who cancel a registration less than 7 days prior to the start of the class will not receive a refund or credit.

Washington Art Association does not offer prorating for classes, and there are no make-ups, credits or refunds if a student misses a class.

Membership fees are non-refundable.
