About the Instructor
Don Florence was born in Pasadena California in 1947. When he was seventeen he received a life-changing scholarship from Walt Disney to join the inaugural class of The California Institute of The Arts. He majored in painting but after graduation he fell into a career as a Creative Director. His clients included Bloomingdales, Estee Lauder and Warner Bros.
Don didn’t start painting again until 2005. His first solo exhibit in 2006 was at the Boltax Gallery in Shelter Island, NY. Since then he’s had solo exhibits in New York City, Boston, Washington CT. and Raleigh NC. In 2018 he gave up his advertising career to focus full-time on making art. Don has painted nearly 200 oil pastel portraits. Ten years ago he started tearing up works that hadn’t sold to make strange, scary and funny faces. He’ll be showing these at The Judy Black Memorial from October 20th to November 15th. He’s lived all over America but has now settled in Southbury CT.
