Cyanotypes are a photographic process where the image is created without the use of a camera, film or a darkroom. The process was developed in 1842. Cyanotypes use a mixture of two chemicals (potassium ferricyanide and ferric ammonium citrate) applied to a paper or fabric which when dry becomes light sensitive. We are going to use already prepared sheets of fabric (5×7) and dried botanicals from the yard to create distinctive prints. The prints are exposed to the Sun and when rinsed in water will turn a distinctive Prussian blue color. Cyanotypes are magical and creating our botanical prints is only the beginning of the possibilities this process holds.

We will be creating them using very simple materials:

Option 1 – an old 9×12 frame complete with glass, backing and a simple way to lock the frame. Your frame should have the little metal tabs on the back.

Option 2 – a piece of glass 9×12. Bulldog clips and a stiff backing

Assorted dried botanicals from the garden

A piece of prepared Cyanotype fabric and the Sun (We need a sunny day because Cyanotypes are developed using the UV light of the Sun. Developing times vary depending on the time of day, season of the year and of course, the weather conditions. We will have available one UV light source to share amongst the students.)
If you have these additional items, please bring:

Old negatives

Transparencies

Sheer Fabrics

Additional dried flowers or live flowers

No prerequisites.

Instructor Material fee of $10 (payable at the Workshop) for the Cyanotype fabric
