Winter Watercolor with Megan Marden (Sundays, 12:00 PM to 2:30 PM)
5 weeks
Sundays, 12:00 PM to 2:30 PM | January 11, February 8, 15 and March 1 and 8
Location: Washington Art Association’s General Studio
This class embraces the immediacy and portability of watercolor to explore seeing, interpreting, and responding to the world around us. Students will create small works based on everyday objects and observations, with an emphasis on process over perfection. Close looking at both our own work and the work of artists from art history will play a central role in shaping each week’s projects. We’ll explore a range of watercolor techniques while learning to embrace the element of chance, imperfection, and the evolving nature of a painting.
MEGAN MARDEN is a painter based in Connecticut. She received her BA and MFA in Painting from Western Connecticut State University and continued her studies in painting and drawing at the New York Studio School. Her work has been supported by grants and awards from the State of Connecticut Office of the Arts and Western Connecticut State University. In 2019, she was a Four Pillars Artist-in-Residence at the Mount Gretna School of Art. Megan exhibits her work at the Oxbow Gallery in East Hampton, Massachusetts, and her paintings have been included in recent group exhibitions at the Joyce Goldstein Gallery, the University of Connecticut, the Bowery Gallery, and The Painting Center.

Testimonials
- With her instruction and encouragement, I found it easy to find the
emotion behind my drawing hand. I learned to listen to the voice inside directing me to choose and experiment with each crayon, ink or other mark-making tools. I would you say to anyone considering taking this workshop that if you are ridged in your drawing practice, this class will free you to start experimenting from within. -Lori Barke - I liked how Moira urged me and others to reach beyond our comfort zones with each piece we worked on. I learned that the drawings I created during the workshop ended up depicting my psychological state. I would recommend this workshop – it’s great fun and a terrific learning experience on so many levels. I will take it again when it’s offered! -Rebecca Lambert

- 1 plain candle (unscented and uncolored)

This class simplifies your understanding of how complementary colors build the complete canvas space to elevate the quality of your artwork. Radiant Light, Atmosphere, Form & Shadow all come from essential contrasts on your palette that allow you to create any personal expression you wish from a suggestion of reality to abstraction.
Quick charcoal sketches help you design the space to see how the pattern of light holds your composition together & serves as a visual map to follow into color. Then your natural brushstrokes transform surface appearance into a poetic interpretation of your original idea with minimal detail.
You’ll be in control of the language of color with the freedom to explore unlimited possibilities. Bring your ongoing artwork for evaluation, or create a new series. All ideas and individual plans are welcome.
Prior experience with the materials is recommended.
