2 days

Saturday, June 6 – Sunday, June 7 | 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM

Location: *Norman Sunshine Center, 11 Green Hill Road, Washington

Maybe you’ve worked with foam printing plates before, maybe it was quite a while ago. It might have even been in Elementary School. We’re going to step up the complexity of this simple easy to use material. In this workshop we will be approaching these plates in a whole new way. The carving will be done with an old ball point pen or dull pencil. The prints will be white line, full color, and mimic reduction plate linoleum prints. The inks are water based so clean up is easy. You’ll experiment with background colors and an array of object colors. You can even roll Ombres of mixed colors. You will need a contour line drawing on a 9 x12 or 8 ½ x 11 paper to begin. All subject matters are possible. Landscapes, seascapes, still life, flowers, animals, even bugs if you like.

No prerequisites.

Intro to Basket Weaving Workshop with Virginia Zimmermann (Tuesday, May 12 | 1:00 PM – 5:00 PM)

Tuesday, May 12 | 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM

Location: *Washington Art Association General Studio

*Depending on student interest and the weather, this workshop can be conducted outdoors in the back patio of WAA

Basket making is as old as humanity. It is an essential craft and art form. People need a means to store and carry things – baskets were created out of this necessity. Every culture, weaves their own twist into the baskets they make. An integral part of the basket making process, is to pass on the knowledge and joy of the craft.

In this workshop you will learn to make a small reed woven basket from beginning (bottom) to rim (border). The techniques can be used to weave future baskets out of all kinds of materials. You can use just about anything to make a basket. You can use store bought reeds or materials gathered from nature. You can also make your own cordage
from plants in the garden. Be careful not to gather poison ivy!

Baskets can be woven anywhere you are comfortable using wet material. The reeds will need to be soaked for about 20 minutes to become flexible. They will require you to periodically dip them back in the water or spray them. If they dry out, they will become brittle once again. We will work at tables in the General Studio or outside on the back patio if the weather is warm.

No prerequisites.

Instructor Material fee of $10 (payable at the Workshop)

The Watercolor Pages Design, Technique & Flow

The Watercolor Pages is a five-week introduction to the watercolor medium where we will take a deep dive into the concepts of Design, Technique and Flow. You will see how these three ideas become the foundation of our watercolor practice.

We will explore values, washes, blending, watering off, textures, layers, negative painting, lifting, color theory and more through fun and beautiful exercises using our jewel toned pigments and water.

As your creative intuition develops, you will feel yourself transforming into becoming an artist. At the end of the five weeks, you will have a beautiful journal, frameable works of art and the ultimate joy of fulfilling your dream of being a watercolor painter.

Let your Sundays truly become a day of rest and relaxation with our spring watercolor class.

Grace’s watercolor paintings vary in subject matter, and both reflect and interpret her personal life experiences.

“My work has evolved through various iterations of illustration, design, advertising, map-making, calligraphy, and more. The harmony of my current artistic direction is energetically aligned with these past experiences and fueled by the ever-expanding universal desire for personal creative expression.”

Grace’s work was highlighted in the June 2022 issue of Fine Art Connoisseur magazine in an article entitled, A Legacy of Women & Art Endures. As a member of several regional art organizations, she has exhibited in New York and Connecticut. Her travels in the southwest have also inspired a series of paintings showcasing the region’s beauty, and had a painting entitled Canyon Colors included in the New Britain Museum of American Art’s Art Party of the Year 2024 Exhibition fundraiser.

She holds signature status artist memberships from The National Association of Women Artists, The North East Watercolor Society, Connecticut Women Artists, Connecticut Watercolor Society and The Catharine Lorillard Wolfe Art Club in New York. Notably, in November 2023, she received The Medal of Honor in watercolor from The Catharine Lorillard Wolfe Art Club, N.Y., NY, for a painting in a series of Industrial Still Life pieces. Grace received the Eve Hellman Memorial Award from the National Association of Women Artists in June 2025.

Grace’s work can be viewed at www.gracescharrmcenaney.com and at www.ctwomenartists.org under Featured Artists.

After earning a degree in art education from MSUM, Brianna worked as a nanny before becoming an art teacher at Saint Paul Academy. Her journey eventually led her to New York City, but her love for nature drew her to Roxbury, Connecticut, where she and her blossoming family lived for several years before relocating to the quaint inspiring village of New Preston.

Brianna serves as the full-time art teacher for Region 12 schools, including Booth, Burnham, and Washington Primary School, where she teaches Kindergarten through Fifth grade. She finds pure delight in watching students discover and nurture their passion for art.

Brianna’s latest venture, the Washington Art Association School Art Program (WAASAP! for short) aims to be a home away from home for your child. Here, children can create to their hearts’ delight while learning about famous artists and techniques in a nurturing and inspiring environment.
